With education to another world

Since spring 2014 we have been forming ourselves in a self-organized way in the Autonomous School Lucerne (ASL). The ASL is a political project consisting of people with all residence permits. Our goal is to work emancipated through education towards a world without authority and domination.

We see ourselves as a political project because we criticize the prevailing conditions and attack them with a counter-movement of solidarity. We still have a wide variety of ideologies and approaches. However, fundamental thoughts are to be shown here in reference to our sister school in Zurich.

We create a space for community and exchange of knowledge, which should give us the opportunity for self-empowerment, the expression of our own voice and creativity. We want to exemplify a social ideal in which every person can breathe freely and live without racism, sexism, discrimination and competition. We reject the concept of multiculturalism as well as that of integration. We do not see people as part of a homogeneous society or culture, but live all in global capitalism, which we want to overcome together. We do not do this through integration, but through emancipation. We see ourselves in the tradition of critical and emancipatory pedagogy.

We want to work with participatory and dialogical methods. Knowledge is not in the sovereignty of the moderators. The courses are learning processes for facilitators and course participants. We try to eliminate the distinction between course participants and facilitators as much as possible. Education at ASL is free of hierarchy. Knowledge may be unequally distributed in a situation and functions may differ, but we meet at eye level.

The ASL sees itself as part of the movement for the right to stay, it shows solidarity with existing autonomous schools and networks with them. The ASL is open to everyone – new moderators and participants are welcome.
